Freja is not a Valkyrie, though she is a practioner of seiðr (in fact, she taught Odin).

Not a valkyrie: http://www.patheos.com/community/paganportal/2011/01/20/wyrd-designs-correcting-common-misperceptions-freyja-the-valkyrie/

Freyja was never held hostage by giants. Idunn was, but never Freyja. You might be confused with her laying with the dwarves for seven days to get her necklace.

Also, she was never considered weak or helpless. Just because the myths that have come down to us mainly deal with the gods doesn't mean that the goddesses did nothing. There was some evidence that Freyja was the leader of the Valkyries, and was a master of a form of magic. The Lokasenna may have a little rant about her being 'a slut', but consider who it was coming from and how that individual tended to lie and corrupt.
